The Big Bang!
The Big Bang!
The Big Bang! First show of the season...
Tales of the origin of the Universe, describe a giant explosion that created everything. Presumably comedy was one of those things. Spencer Humm aka. “Spence” aka “Slash” of “Hack and Slash” and Jimmy Meritt aka “Jimmy Meritt”, local comedy hero, have joined forces to create "The DC Comedy Lab", a comedy showcase extravaganza. Hip, casual, and experimental, the DC Comedy Lab will showcase stand-up, sketch comedy, improvisational work, music, and some very funny variety acts. It’s not as big a “bang” as the “Big Bang”, but it’s definitely the start of something funny for the DC/VA/MD area!
We’ll be hosting a few of these this Fall/Winter and we hope you’ll join us. Each show will be different and we are looking forward to some great guests.
For the first show, we're proud to have special guest musical act Ruthe Charles and Dusty Dzambo.

Spence has been a regular in the Tampa and Orlando comedy scene this last year and can’t wait to bring some new funny stuff home to D.C. Putting fresh material in front of audiences and bringing new groups of artists together for the first time are what the D.C. Comedy Lab is all about!
Ruthe has a great Rock and PowerPop sound you’ll want to check out. She's a regular on 98 Rock and has been performing some hard-hitting shows all over the area. You can check her out with a full band on MySpace, but for our show she and Dusty are rocking old school acoustic!
We plan on ending each show with an experimental segment that includes all the artists from that evening, working together in some creative way. Who knows what’ll happen?!
We have been talking to some amazing artists for the later shows so make sure you’re on the mailing list for the next Comedy Lab update! Join the mailing list, become an official “Lab Rat”, and we’ll email you with show discounts and an invitation to the after parties with all the artists.
Jimmy Meritt, in addition to touring colleges in thirty states a year, has been performing comedy in DC for the last six years. He's really pumped to be involved in a show that gives everyone involved with performance art in DC a chance to interact in fun and unexpected ways.
The show will be the Comedy Spot, in Ballston, VA. It’s easy to get to off 495 and 66, there’s plenty of garage parking attached to the Ballston Commons Mall, where the Spot is located. It’s also conveniently close to the Ballston Metro stop.
We’ll be in their cool blackbox theater. It’s a really intimate venue that seats under 100 people, so all the seats are great and you’ll be able to count the strings on Ruthe’s guitar. (Not that you’ll need to count them, there are six. Unless she does something “experimental” and plays her two-string, which would be edgy and avant garde but Bjork probably already tried it, so never mind.)
After the show, there will be an a gathering at a restaurant or bar downstairs from the club and we will be inviting all the Lab Rats to join us, so it’ll be a great date, night if you want, with nearby places to eat, shop, movies and bars all in one place. If you email ahead, we’ll be your wingman and tell the audience that we know you and that you’re really cool. Just send us:
• Your name
• Your date’s name
• How we supposedly know you and any other lies you would like us to validate publicly to assure your special friend appreciates your company and high social value. (Otherwise we can just make something up.)
First come, first serve on that offer. We’ll also lie to bachelorette parties and bus tours that you may be accompanying. We’re not proud.
See you there!
